We build both, so we have no horse in this race. The right answer depends on whether you own or rent, how odd your bedroom is, and how long you plan to stay. Here is the comparison we walk clients through, numbers included.
Where built-ins win
Space efficiency. A built-in uses the full height to your ceiling and wraps around beams, columns and window bays. In a typical KL condo bedroom that recovers 30 to 40 percent more storage volume than the largest freestanding unit that would fit the same wall.
The dust gap disappears. No cleaning on top of the wardrobe, no lost hangers behind it, no gecko real estate.
Resale presentation. Agents tell us fitted bedrooms photograph better and viewers read them as “renovated”, which helps at valuation time.
Where freestanding wins
You keep it. Renters and frequent movers should almost always go freestanding — a well-made solid wood wardrobe moves house with you for decades.
Flexibility. Rearranging the room, converting a bedroom to a study, or passing the piece to a family member all stay possible.
Lower entry price. A quality freestanding wardrobe starts cheaper than any fitted system of similar width.
The numbers we quote most often
| Option | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Freestanding 4-door, solid nyatoh | RM 3,200 – RM 6,500 |
| Built-in hinged, 6 ft, laminate | RM 4,200 – RM 7,500 |
| Built-in sliding, 8 ft, laminate/veneer | RM 7,000 – RM 13,000 |
| Walk-in closet system | RM 12,000 – RM 26,000 |
Our rule of thumb
Own the home and plan to stay five years or more: built-in, no hesitation. Renting or likely to move: freestanding, in the best wood you can afford. Somewhere in between: a hybrid — a fitted carcass with a freestanding dresser — often lands the best of both.
